Dutch stock options trading in Germany

Written by Jack. Posted at 9:57 pm on July 14th, 2010

A few days ago I listed the most traded stock options last week on Euronext. For several years, the German rival derivatives exchange Eurex has tried to capture market share from Amsterdam. While it never has been a cut throat threat to Euronext, mainly due to retail investors kept at the Dutch home market by their brokers, Eurex never gave up and in some option classes it it participating for over 20%.

I’ve collected the list of the volume on Dutch stock options traded last week, and compared with the traded volume in Amsterdam. Especially in Mittal, Unilever, ING and Philips the relative volume of Eurex is very reasonable. In 2011, or perhaps in 2012, the Dutch options will be scattered around at more exchanges – as TOM trading will be a serious contender.

    Nooooo, Doutzen is pregnant! :-(

  6. Jack, it looks like you have not calculated the percentages correctly. It should be Eurex/(Euronext+Eurex).

  7. Thanks!

  8. Jack, do you also have the number of trades? It would be interesting to see that being compared as well.

Wow .. are u going to use the stats about number of trades in your Quantitative Research formula and come up with optimized and “correct” quoting and trading size in different markets ?

  10. No – but the number of trades would give information on the prof market size crossed on the Eurex. If everything is prof, the screen market on Eurex would be dead

there is a rumour coming out of the clearing houses that both imc and all options have some serious financial issues – get ready for more staff reductions

Unsurprisingly .. the volumes are not probably enough in local markets and the international markets are too competitive .. the market cant support these many people in a bloated trading company .. just like the capital markets couldn’t support all those people let go from bloated big banks ..

  13. Congrats to Tom!
