Terrific, 250 pages of confidential insider material. Managers about eachother and looking as fierce post-war resistance fighters against Richard Den Drijver (page 122). The group of derivative traders are described as “ignorant and spoiled” by their former management Egbert Pronk and Frank van der Linden.
The latter must have been a true visionary – as he declared Van der Moolen a dead dinosaur. Back in 2003. He’s surprising positive on his own role as deputy for the main managers Kroon and Den Drijver. Anyway, here’s another version of the official report : as searchable pdf.

Van der Linden is met Pronk bezig
geweest te onderhandelen met deze handelaren door uit t e leggen dat het op de lange termijn
onhoudbaar voor de onderneming zou zijn als ze aqn hun contracten zouden blijven vasthouden. Er
was echter weinig beweging in de handelaren te krijgen (door Van der Linden en Pronk omschreven
als “wereldvreemd en verwend”). Een groep van 20 (voormalig Curvalue) handelaren schreef op 18
november 2008 een brief aan Den Drijver waarin zij uitvoerig argumenteren dat hun
overeenkomsten niet eenzijdig gewijzigd kunnen worden en waarin zij met maar heel weinig water
in de wijn de voorstellen van management van de hand wijzen. Van der Linden is ook nog aan de
slag gegaan met het aanpakken van de IT problemen die de betreffende handelaren als verbeterpunt
noemden maar de handelaren zijn nimmer “overstag gegaan”.

Another highlight: Gaby sent VDM a 30k euro invoice for 10 tables he bought at Ikea. His father taught him well. Now I understand why the move to the Schiphol office cost millions.

Note that Richard’s personal assistant Lenny vd Ham looks very bad in the whole investigation. Known as the “wicked witch”, but on the other hand she is just a low ranked employee – not really the prime suspect in the whole thing. Everybody hates her (read the last letter for example : vd Ham is a “spy” and blackmailer), and a willing piece in the corrupt mess. Oh – and for those who don’t know her : she is old and as far from a beautiful secretary as you can possibly get.

De onderzoekers waren hier inderdaad erg kort door de bocht. Waar het hier om draaide is dat de werkgever arbeidsovereenkomsten eenzijdig en met terugwerkende kracht (en overigens met een nogal gammele motivering) wilde wijzigen. Vergelijk het met een werkgever die plotseling je (vaste) salaris wil verlagen of je arbeidsovereenkomst voor onbepaalde tijd wil omzetten naar een tijdelijke (slagingskans: nihil). Het ligt primair niet op de weg van de werknemers (de handelaren bij Curvalue in dit geval) om dan “water bij de wijn” te doen. Voor wat hoort wat. Dat weten de onderzoekers ook wel (ze noemen Linda expliciet “integer” terwijl ze tot over haar oren in het dividendstrippen zat en dit verdedigde tegen de pers), maar deze misslag doet weinig af aan de teneur van het vernietigende rapport.
In het geval van Curvalue is Egbert nou niet bepaald de persoon die met recht van spreken anderen “verwend” mag noemen. Dat gezegd hebbende, de overhead bij Curvalue en bij VDM UK was bij lange na niet kostendekkend (daar hadden Egbert/RDD een punt). De illusie dat ze een cash bonus konden omzetten in aandelen VDM (zonder een uittocht en masse van de overgebleven handelaren) dient te worden getypeerd als “wereldvreemd”.

When Tibra started in London apparently they had some ex-Optiver traders who broke the non-competes. It was kept very quiet and the traders had to use fake email addresses until the non-competes expired

Help me out guys, my Dutch is a bit rusty. Does it really state on page 120 that VDM Switzerland chose not to hedge Volkswagen positions that caused a loss of 5 million EUROS? Was that this doctor Neuman guy? And was Den Drijver responsible for the U.S. positions that cost $ 20 million?
Tibra guys got extremely lucky. Be it with their setup (you know what I mean) and the extraordinarily good times for generating trading profits. Had Tibra been an setup without certain kind of help and started in the current market environment those guys would not have made shit compared to what they made. But it is of course far easier to attribute success to oneself and failure to external factors. The mere fact that some of those rich Tibra founders got married shows their lack of common sense – who is so stupid to marry a cinderalla with the risk of losing a significant chunk of wealth down the road when it comes to a divorce.
indian people are very old-school and traditional when it comes to marriage .. so i dont expect danny to experience a divorce any time really .. dont know about other founders .. probably the wives are not your everyday gold diggers but very much the strong person standing solidly behind their husbands who have generated once in a life time wealth .. so they knew their wives from before they become rich .. and i fully expect the strong support of their wives helped in appreciable way for their success ..

The $ 20 million were lost by VDM USA’s Dream Team: Richard Den Drijver and Anthony Buendia (formerly with La Branche and Susquehanna). They sold truckloads of put options on US banks in the first half of 2008. Buendia left VDM as quickly as he had arrived, never to be heard of again.

optiver has very very conservative culture towards risk .. except for dowson, i havent come across a optiver partner who is big swinging dick about risk when punting with company’s money .. trading is all about managing downside risk and money management .. as long as you hack and cut your losses, there are more than enough days to make a killing !

Tibra were granted an extension to file their evidence. It is now due on the 8th of July, and a directions hearing is set down for the 15th of July.

the most optiver ever made in aus was around 425mio in 2008. the aud was quite weak at the end of that year though. they made 85 on energy trading and nearly 100 on the kospi. ridiculous

Dat hangt ervan af aan wie je het vraagt. Vraag je het aan de fiscus dat zullen ze je vertellen dat het als verboden wordt gezien (“abuse of law” in jargon). In sommige landen (Engeland en Frankrijk bijvoorbeeld) zijn ze inmiddels wat meer to the point en zeggen ze gewoon dat het illegaal is. Punt. Als je het niet al te groot doet, is het maar de vraag of iemand ernaar kraait, dat geldt algemeen natuurlijk voor meer dingen die het daglicht niet verdragen.
Vraag je het aan GSFS en (voorheen) VDM dan vertellen ze je dat het dik in orde is en dat je rustig kunt gaan slapen. Geloof jij ze?
Ik zou zeggen, lees het onderzoeksverslag (er is een heel hoofdstuk gewijd aan “dividendarbitrage” zoals het daar wordt genoemd) en trek je eigen conclusies. Dat bevat genoeg voorbeelden van hoe het NIET hoort.

Gekko Global Markets used to be known as VDM Global Markets when Den Drijver introduced it around the start of 2009 as the successor to the equally successfull Online Trader.
All employees of VDM (including the traders) were more or less obliged / forced to do the testing of the trading platform (during exchange hours). As an “incentive”, each employee was given a 500 euro live trading account. That’s plain five hundred euros, not 500k in case you think I made a typo. And no leverage. Any profits that were generated (after fees and the rather large spreads) you could keep. How generous!! Shows you what a cheapskate Den Drijver really was.

It has been almost three and a half years when Van der Moolen went down. The company filed for bankruptcy September 10th 2009. A pity. Public trading firms burning money like VDM are thin on the ground. Their quarterly reports were juicy material.
Fast forward to 2013. The court decided what everybody has always known, it has been maladministration. Hans Kroon and Richard den Drijver ruined the firm, investigators concluded. Some members of the Supervisory Board, more specific Van den Broek and De Marez Oyens, also must have had a bad weekend.
The investigation wasn’t cheap – 435.962,05 euros. Judge decided Den Drijver and Hans Kroon will have to finance this. This is only a first hit, as the road is open for claims against them. Shareholder association VEB will be eager to take action.
